Mustang News Wins Honors
Mustang News staffers show off some of their awards at the National College Journalism Convention.
Mustang News, the Journalism Department’s student-run integrated newsroom, received national and state recognition with 20 awards from the Associated Collegiate Press and the California College Media Association.
During the National College Journalism Convention (Feb. 27-March 2), the Associated Collegiate Press awarded Mustang News first in Best of Show – Website Large School category, and first in Best of Show – Multimedia Package for “Bringing Jams to the Gym.” Mustang News received third place for Best of Show – Special Section.
Staffers also received 17 awards from the California College Media Association, including:
- Best Feature Story: Brian De Los Santos (Journalism), first place
- Best Sports Column: J.J. Jenkins (Business Administration), first place
- Best Arts & Entertainment Story: Aryn Sanderson (Journalism), second place
- Best Video: Carly Rickards (Journalism) and Spencer Sarson (Business Administration), second place
- Best News-Page Design: Kaytlyn Leslie (Journalism), second place
- Best Arts & Entertainment Column/Criticism: Nick Larson (Kinesiology) and Jake Devincenzi (Aerospace Engineering), second place
- Best Feature Story: Aryn Sanderson (Journalism), third place
- Best Sports Story: Jacob Lauing (Journalism), third place
- Best Multimedia Presentation: Staff, third place
- Best Special Section: Staff, first place
- Best Back to School or Orientation Issue: Staff, second place
- Best Sales Promotion Materials: Albert Chang (Art & Design), first place
- Best Online Promotion: Staff, first place
- Best Group Promotion: Nicole Bergmann (Art & Design), second place
- Best Online Advertisement: Albert Chang (Art & Design), third place
- Best Color Advertisement: Kelsey Lancaster (Art & Design), third place
- Best Group Promotion: Staff, third place
Mustang News is now looking to #TopHarvard. The Harvard Crimson student newspaper has more than 18,000 likes on Facebook and Mustang News aims to exceed the Ivy League competitor.
The grassroots #TopHarvard campaign is the news organization’s means to promote school spirit, share outstanding student work across all media platforms, and help students stay informed with community and campus news and events.
#TopHarvard began in February with a little more than 2,000 likes. As of press time, the page has reached 5,533. Help Mustang News #TopHarvard — like Mustang News on Facebook.
