From Political Science Student to Public Service Trailblazer

Kelli Seybolt (B.A., Political Science, 1990) has spent more than 20 years as a dedicated member of the federal service with posts that include deputy undersecretary of the Air Force and chief of the Space and Cyberspace Division, International Affairs.

As director of International Affairs and Foreign Policy Advisor for the U.S. Coast Guard, Seybolt uses her political science background to effectively administer agency strategy, policy and programs relating to international Coast Guard activities.

At Cal Poly’s Homecoming (Oct. 31-Nov. 1), Seybolt was among only six distinguished Honored Alumni recipients. The award — the highest honor bestowed upon Cal Poly alumni — recognizes one outstanding graduate or former student in each of the university’s six colleges.

“Consistently working at the intersection of public policy, technology and international relations, Kelli assumed increasingly important leadership roles in the historically male-dominated Department of Defense,” said Douglas Epperson, dean of the College of Liberal Arts. “Her personal and professional success as a trailblazer, leader and public servant is a wonderful model for our students.”
