Cal Poly Choirs Kick Off 2016-17 Season on Oct. 29

Cal Poly’s choral ensembles of 2016-17 will be introduced in a concert featuring various styles — from 18th century motets to folk songs and spirituals — at 8p.m. Saturday, Oct. 29, in the Performing Arts Center.

PolyPhonics, the University Singers and the Early Music Ensemble will present the “New Beginnings; New Horizons” fall concert, which begins conductor Thomas Davies’ final year as director of choral activities and vocal studies at Cal Poly. He and his wife, Susan, are in their 34th year of teaching at Cal Poly.

SAN LUIS OBISPO — The Cal Poly Journalism Department is planning a two-day celebration in honor of the 100th anniversary of the student press on Friday and Saturday, Oct. 14-15.
 

The weekend festivities will culminate with a Spotlight Gala at the
Embassy Suites by Hilton in San Luis Obispo starting at 5:30 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 15. Ben Bradlee Jr., former deputy managing editor of the Boston Globe, will give the keynote address. The journalist and author led the paper’s 2003 Pulitzer Prize-winning series on abuse in the Roman Catholic Church. His team’s investigation was the basis for the movie “Spotlight,” winner of the 2016 Academy Award for Best Picture.

Cal Poly Music Department Announces 2016-17 Event

The Cal Poly Music Department will start its 2016-17 season with the Cal Poly Choirs’ Fall Concert at 8 p.m. Saturday,
Oct. 29, in Harman Hall of the Performing Arts Center's Christopher Cohan Center.

Music Professor Thomas Davies will celebrate his final year as director of choral activities and vocal studies with a “Year of Thanksgiving”
concerts. The Oct. 29 concert is aptly titled “New Beginnings … New Horizons.”

Additional season highlights will include faculty member John Astaire performing his first solo percussion recital Nov. 4 in the PAC Pavilion.
The recital will feature works by modern composers Iannis Xenakis and Louis Andriessen, plus Poul Ruders’ “Towards the Precipice,” a rarely performed piece that Astaire called “massively intense.”

Cal Poly Bachelor’s Degree Grads' Median Salaries Rank 10th in Nation Among Public Universities on PayScale.com Survey

Cal Poly bachelor’s degree graduates rank 10th in the nation among public universities for median salaries, according to PayScale.com’s 2016-17 College Salary Report.

Early career graduates with a bachelor’s degree from Cal Poly earn an average of $59,300, up from last year's $57,800, while graduates in mid-career earn $102,000, an increase from 2015’s $99,500, according to the report released Sept. 20.

Cal Poly also ranked third in the state among public universities behinds UC Berkeley (26th) and UC San Diego (36th).

On the list for bachelor's-only graduates, Cal Poly moved up 19 places from last year on the full list of 963 public and private universities. It tied for 49th place with three private schools — Loyola University, Northwestern University and Yale University — and two public universities — Michigan Technological University and University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign.

“This new ranking recognizes that a Cal Poly education continues to be among the best in the nation,” said Cal Poly President Jeffrey D. Armstrong. “Our graduates hit the ground running from the first day of their careers.
