Cal Poly Bands to Celebrate ‘American Masters’ at Bandfest Concert Nov. 13

Nearly 300 students will perform at Cal Poly’s annual Bandfest at 3 p.m. Sunday, Nov. 13, in Harman Hall in the Performing Arts Center’s Christopher Cohan Center.

The show, titled “American Masters,” will feature the Cal Poly Wind Orchestra and Wind Ensemble in an evening of bold and powerful works by living American composers for the modern symphonic band.

The evening will also include the Mustang Marching Band performing high-energy selections for the traditional stadium band.

Noted Photographer Speaks at Cal Poly

Noted Photographer, Filmmaker Henry Horenstein to Speak Oct. 25 at Cal Poly

Distinguished American photographer and filmmaker Henry Horenstein will speak at Cal Poly from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 25, in the Constructions Innovations Center (No. 186), Room C303.

Horenstein will show samples of his photographs and films while telling the stories behind the images. His work includes fine art and commercial photography, book publishing and, more recently, documentary films.

He has published more than 30 books, including monographs such as “Animalia,” “Honky Tonk,” “Close Relations” and “Show,” and instructional texts about analogue and digital photography.

Cal Poly Theatre and Dance Department Presents 'Cosi'

The Cal Poly Theatre and Dance Department will present the comedy “Cosi” at 8 p.m. Thursday through Saturday, Nov. 10-12, and Tuesday through Thursday, Nov 15-17,in the university’s Spanos Theatre.

The play, written by Australian playwright Louis Nowra, is set in a mental institution in Melbourne, Australia, in 1971. In the production, Lewis, a recent university graduate, is hired to direct a play to be performed by the patients. Roy, an ebullient manic-depressive, convinces the group to perform Mozart’s opera “Cosi fan Tutti.”

Cal Poly and KSBY Host Forum for Congressional District Candidates

Candidates Salud Carbajal and Justin Fareed will reply to select questions supplied from the live audience and KSBY’s social media platforms. The event will be moderated by KSBY News anchor Carina Corral. The station will broadcast the first hour of the forum live on KSBY-TV (NBC) and live-stream the entire event at
www.ksby.com 

Doors will open at 5:30 p.m., and seating will be on a first-come basis. Approximately 350 seats will be available to the public. Doors will close at 6:15 p.m.; the live broadcast will begin promptly at 6:30 p.m. Complimentary parking will be available in the Grand Avenue parking structure.

Dr. Stacey Pearson-Wharton: ‘Being a Person of Color in White Spaces’

Predominately white colleges and universities have taken many meaningful steps to become more diverse, but many students of color still feel discrimination, social isolation and psychological challenges during their education. This discussion will cover these challenges as well as the joys of being a POC at a white institution through personal stories of success and growth. Pearson-Wharton will offer practical lessons and tools. Food will be provided.
