Cal Poly to Present Bandfest on Nov. 23

Nearly 300 students will perform at Cal Poly’s annual Bandfest at 3 p.m. Sunday, Nov. 23, in Harman Hall in the Performing Arts Center’s Christopher Cohan Center.

The concert will feature Cal Poly's Wind Orchestra, Wind Ensemble, and the Mustang Marching Band in an evening of bold and powerful works for the modern wind band and the traditional stadium marching band.

The concert will begin with the Wind Orchestra performing John Wasson’s “American Fanfare,” Gordon Jacob’s “An Original Suite,” James Kazik’s “Eviler Elves,” and a beautiful arrangement of the traditional English folk song “The Turtle Dove” by Swiss musician Etienne Crausaz. The Wind Ensemble will then perform Dmitri Shostakovich’s “Festive Overture,” Percy Grainger’s

“Children’s March: Over the Hills and Far Away,” John Mackey’s “Night on Fire,” and the new tone poem “Machu Picchu – City in the Sky” by Japanese composer Satoshi Yagisawa.

The combined forces of the Wind Orchestra and the Wind Ensemble will continue the concert with music especially suited to a concert band of more than 135 performers. This portion of the concert will include a special arrangement of the U.S. national anthem by American film composer John Williams, a tribute to the 200th anniversary of Francis Scott Key writing “The Star Spangled Banner” during the Battle of Baltimore at Fort McHenry.

The Mustang Band will conclude the concert with arrangements they are performing at this fall’s football games in Spanos Stadium. Along with traditional favorites, the band will perform popular hits such as Fall Out Boy's "Thanks for the Memories," Carlos Santana's eponymous selection from his first album, "Santana," and "Fire" by Jimi Hendrix.

Tickets to the concert are $12 and $14 for the public and $9 and $12 for senior citizens and students. Pricing includes all Performing Arts Center fees, and event parking is sponsored by the PAC. Tickets are sold at the Performing Arts Ticket office between noon and 6 p.m. Tuesday throughSaturday. To order by phone, call SLO-4TIX (805-756-4849).
