A gift from a generous donor kick-started construction plans for an exciting new building that will place the College of Liberal Arts in the first explicitly interdisciplinary building on campus.

The college is using the opportunity to create the Expressive Technology Studios (ETS), a physical space dedicated developing the intersection between technology, humanity and the arts.

Students and faculty in the space will regularly interact with colleagues outside their disciplines, helping develop social connections that lead to intellectual inspiration and creativity.

With its diverse project spaces, an environment designed to foster interaction, and state-of-the-art equipment, the Expressive Technology Studios will be home to innovative collaborations, especially those that deal with expression, arts and technological interconnection.

• Using the same professional hardware and software found in the entertainment industry, students will be able to create broadcast-quality video, digital special effects, virtual reality experiences and digital games.

• Students will have an acoustic sound studio to produce music and soundscapes for video productions, games and augmented reality environments.

• Digital networking will support creative planning with teams on campus, across the state and around the world, allowing students to work directly with new corporate partners.

• From planning and producing, through post-production and distribution, students will have a complete hub where they can work together to create a range of media, preparing them for professions ranging from animation to risk communication.

Thanks to a generous donor, most of the funding for the building is secured, but we need your help to create the Expressive Technology Studios that will open a new world of possibilities for Cal Poly students.

We must raise $4 million by June 2017 to make this happen. The timeline is accelerated because the architects will finalize plans by that date.

Gifts of all sizes will make a difference in the lives of generations of students. Donations of $5,000 and above will be recognized on the building’s donor wall.
