We are seeking self-motivated, detail oriented and friendly Peer Advisors to help the CLA Advising Center make a difference and support student success!

CLA Peer Advisor (PA)


College of Liberal Arts Advising Center, Dean’s Office


$13 per hour; Federal Work Study accepted


Hours per week will be set each quarter around class schedules,

Hours will be an average of 10 hours/week and range each quarter 4-15 hours/week; between the hours of 8am-5pm, M-F.

Supervised by:

Sabrina Canady, Lead Academic Advisor

(with additional guidance from our Associate Dean, Professional Advisors and Lead PA)


Job Description


Role and Responsibilities

The CLA Advising Center employs motivated student leaders as Peer Advisors (PAs) to assist CLA students with academic advising and registration. PAs are expected to:

  • Represent the College and University in a professional, responsible and respectful manner
  • Greet and check-in students who visit the CLA Advising Center
  • Respond to daily email and phone demands, including advising questions, appointment requests and campus resource referrals
  • Help CLA students to understand General Education and major requirements
  • Assist students with understanding their Degree Progress Report (DPR), AP & IB transfer credit, PolyProfile & PolyPlanner
  • Assist first year students with general academic planning
  • Understand and communicate University and College academic policies and procedures
  • Understand and communicate CLA academic curriculum requirements
  • Act as an informed resource for CLA students for matters related to PASS and registration
  • Assist students with reading and interpreting for transfer credit
  • Guide students in identifying the many academic success resources available at Cal Poly
  • Perform other duties as assigned by Advisors to support the Advising Center’s mission



  • College of Liberal Arts student
  • Ability to work for at least the full 19-20 academic year, preferably beyond
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills
  • Ability to work effectively with diverse populations of students, faculty, and staff
  • Capacity for discretion, diplomacy and confidentiality
  • Able to work independently with a responsible, self-motivated and proactive work ethic
  • Resourcefulness
  • Minimum GPA of 2.5 and remain in good academic standing during duration of employment
  • Must be enrolled at Cal Poly in a minimum of 6 units

Training Commitment

Selected PAs must be available for mandatory trainings held during Spring quarter:


  • University Wide PA training: TBD, likely half day April 10th
  • Training with supervisor, weeks 3-9 (3 hours, twice per week; day and time TBD) ​​​​​
  • AND the Mon, Tues & Wed prior to the start of Fall 2020


Online Applications due: Monday Feb 20th by 5pm

Interviews for selected candidates will be as follows:
  • Panel interview with Supervisor, Academic Advisor and Lead Peer Advisor: will be scheduled between Feb 25-28.
  • Those invited to move to the second round interview will attend a group interview with our current Peer Advisor team, week of March 2nd.
  • Final decisions will be made dead week.
