We are seeking self-motivated, detail oriented and inclusive Peer Advisors to help the CLA Advising Center make a difference and support student success!

Job Title:

CLA Peer Advisor (PA)

Department:

College of Liberal Arts Advising Center, Dean’s Office

Compensation:

$16.50 per hour; Federal Work Study accepted

Hours:

Hours per week will be set each quarter around class schedules,

Hours will be an average of 10 hours/week and range each quarter 4 minimum - 15 hours/week; between the hours of 8am-5pm, M-F. Occasional evening or weekend.

Supervised By:

Sabrina Canady, Lead Academic Advisor

(with additional guidance from our Associate Dean, Professional Advisors and Lead PA)

 

Job Description:

 

Role & Responsibilities

The CLA Advising Center employs motivated and diverse student leaders as Peer Advisors (PAs) to assist CLA students with academic advising and registration. PAs are expected to:

  • Represent the College and University in a professional, responsible and inclusive manner
  • Greet and respectfully check-in the diverse student body who visits CLA Advising
  • Manage Zoom drop-in advising, providing support to students and advisors
  • Professionally respond to daily email and phone demands, including advising questions, appointment requests and campus resource referrals, and initiate various student adobesign forms
  • Help CLA students to understand General Education and major requirements
  • Assist students with understanding their Degree Progress Report (DPR), AP & IB transfer credit, PolyProfile & Degree Planner
  • Act as an informed resource for CLA students for matters related to Schedule Builder and registration
  • Assist first year and second year students with general academic planning
  • Understand and clearly communicate University and College academic policies and procedures
  • Assist students with reading and interpreting Assist.org for transfer credit
  • Guide students in identifying the many academic success resources available at Cal Poly
  • Perform other duties as assigned by Advisors to support the Advising Center’s mission

 

Qualifications/Requirements

  • College of Liberal Arts student
  • Ability to work for at least the full 2025-2026 academic year, preferably beyond
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills
  • Appreciation for and ability to work effectively with diverse populations of students, faculty, and staff
  • Capacity for discretion, diplomacy and confidentiality
  • Able to work independently with a responsible, self-motivated and proactive work ethic
  • Resourcefulness
  • Minimum GPA of 2.5 and remain in good academic standing during duration of employment
  • Must be enrolled at Cal Poly in a minimum of 6 units

Training Commitment

Selected PAs must be available for mandatory training held during Spring quarter:

 

  • University Wide PA training: TBD, likely half day on first or second Friday of winter quarter
  • Training with CLA Advising, weeks 3-9 (about 3 hours, twice per week; day and time TBD) ​​​​​
  • AND Mon - Wed prior to the start of Fall 2025. This may conflict with WOW and you may not be able to do both.

ZOOM Interviews for selected candidates will be as follows:
  • Panel interview with Supervisor and Lead Peer Advisor will be scheduled for sometime between Feb 10-14 .
  • Those invited for a second round interview with our current Peer Advisor team will be scheduled for sometime between Feb 24-Mar 5.
  • Final decisions made by Friday March 7.
