Advising and academic support
You can connect with department advisors and faculty to plan coursework, choose a concentration, prepare for internships and stay on track through the major.
First-year students should start at the Mustang Success Center. Starting your second year? We have specific advice for you.
Student Media and Leadership
Get published. Get on air. Get in charge.
Mustang News
You will not be fetching coffee. Mustang News runs in print, online and across social, and you report, write, edit and grow the audience from your first semester on.
Mustang News Television
Produce a live newscast, not a class assignment. MNTV puts you behind the camera, in the booth and on air for campus and Central Coast audiences.
KCPR
KCPR 91.3 FM is yours to run. You program the music, report the news and hold the mic for all of San Luis Obispo County.
Mustang News Public Relations
Real clients, real campaigns, real deadlines. MNPR, formerly Central Coast PRspectives, is a nationally accredited student-managed firm where you own strategy, audience research and campaign work that actually ships.
PRSSA
Meet the people who will hire you. PRSSA brings in guest speakers, runs workshops and gets you to national conferences while you are still a student.
Journalists of Color Club
Open to every major and every background. JOC pairs you with a mentor, gets you off campus for bonfires and hikes, and pushes this newsroom to look more like the audience it serves.
Department Resources and Activities
What else comes with the major.
Equipment Checkout and Tech Office
The cameras, mics and tripods are already yours. Reserve what you need from the Journalism Tech Office in Building 26, keep it five business days and go shoot.
Scholarships and Awards
Good work gets paid for here. The department awards scholarships and honors for academic achievement, service, student media leadership and financial need. You just have to apply.
Internships
Every major does one. You will spend a term at a newsroom, agency or media company, supervised by a professional and earning credit for the work. Start early and we will help you find the fit.
Senior Project
The last big thing you make, and the one you will show people. Choose an independent project with a faculty advisor, team reporting or a client campaign through MNPR. Talk to faculty early.
