Journalists of Color Club

JOC

Journalists of Color at Cal Poly (JOC@CalPoly) is a student-led organization dedicated to building a welcoming, collaborative community for aspiring journalists of all backgrounds. Founded by Journalism students Cassandra Garcia and Naomi Vanderlip, the club creates opportunities for students to connect, develop practical skills, and engage in thoughtful conversations about diversity, representation, and equity in journalism. Through biweekly meetings, networking opportunities, professional-development activities, and social events, JOC@CalPoly gives members a space to share experiences and strengthen the relationships that support their growth as journalists.

JOC@CalPoly is open to students of every major and identity who are interested in contributing to a more inclusive media landscape. The organization also offers a mentorship program that pairs members for mutual support, collaboration, and career development. With faculty adviser Professor Julie Lynem and student leaders committed to fostering meaningful dialogue, JOC@CalPoly helps prepare students to report responsibly, work alongside diverse communities, and build more representative newsrooms.
