Campus will be closed Monday, Feb. 15 in observance of Presidents Day.

Tuesday, Feb. 16 will operate under a Monday schedule.

Open House T-shirt Design Competition

Students – design a T-shirt for the CLA print-your-own-shirt activity at Open House in April. The winner will receive a prize of $300! Submit a one-color design that appeals to both incoming students and alumni. Design for an 8 x 10 inch space. Submit a low-resolution version of your design to cla@calpoly.edu by Friday, March 18. Include “T-shirt Design” in the subject line. If your design is chosen, you will need to provide a vector image for reproduction. A committee of CLA representatives will choose the winner, and you will be notified by Friday, March 25.

Statistics Department Offers Consulting Services Through March 11

The Statistics Department provides a consulting service to the university community to facilitate research design and data analysis in a wide variety of disciplines. The service supports faculty and staff projects and research, assists students working on senior projects and graduate research, and offers advise on data collection, experimental design and analysis of research projects. Click here for more information. Consulting is available by appointment only through Friday, March 11.

Innovation Quest: Final Information Session

Students – are you interested in free food and a chance to win $15,000? Join Innovation Quest for its final information session. The Innovation Quest (iQ) competition is back for the 13th year and students of all colleges and majors are highly encouraged to apply and participate. iQ is a contest that fosters entrepreneurship, creativity, and innovation and helps students learn about the journey from idea to prototype to company. Students with projects, inventions, creations, or startup concepts can bring their ideas to iQ and compete for cash prizes. This year’s competition will award at least $30,000 in prizes, with a $15,000 first place prize. If you don’t have an idea yet, there will be plenty of teams searching for more members.

Dr. Victor Rios on the ‘School-to-Prison Pipeline’

2 p.m. Tuesday, Feb. 16

University Union (Bldg. 65), Room 220

Ethnic Studies hosts Dr. Victor Rios, author and award winning professor of Sociology at UCSB. Rios will present his talk, “Punitive Social Control, the Youth Control Complex, and the School-to-Prison Pipeline”. The event is free and open to the public. 

 

Film Screening and Discussion with Gilda Ochoa: ‘Profits of Prison’ 

4:10-6 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 18

Math and Science (Bldg. 38), Room 114

View the film, “Profits of Prison”, and join Dr. Gilda Ochoa for a discussion on the prison industrial complex. Light refreshments will be served. The event is open to the public.

 

‘Governed Through Choice’ Discussion

10-11:30 a.m. Friday, Feb. 19

Kennedy Library (Bldg. 35), Room 111H (Talk Lounge)

Join Assistant Professor of Political Science Dr. Jennifer Debow and Dr. Brian Beaton, Director of Center for Expressive Technologies, in a discussion about “Governed Through Choice: Autonomy, Technology, and the Politics of Reproduction,” a book written by Denbow. Light refreshments will be served. Learn more.

 

‘Ethnicity, Race, and Migration in European Football’ Presentation 

12:10-1 p.m. Friday, Feb. 19

Business Building (Bldg. 3), Room 213

David Goldblatt is an English academic, journalist and author of several books on soccer, including “The Ball is Round: A Global History of Football,” “Futebol Nation: The Story of Brazil through Soccer,” and “The Game of Our Lives: The Meaning and Making of English Football”. Goldblatt is also active in FARE (Football Against Racism in Europe). This talk, “One Step Forwards, Two Steps Backwards”, will discuss European football and race. 

 

New Gallery Exhibit: Tad Carpenter, Graphic Designer

5 p.m. Friday, Feb. 19

Agricultural Engineering (Bldg. 8), Room 123

University Art Gallery will exhibit the work of Tad Carpenter, internationally acclaimed graphic designer, Feb. 19 through Mar. 18. Carpenter will open the exhibit with a talk at 5 p.m. Friday, Feb. 19. A reception will follow in the gallery, located on the ground floor of the Dexter Building (No. 34). A wide range of Carpenter’s work will be on display, including logos, posters, books, sketches, fan flags and more. 

 

University Jazz Bands Presents ‘Just Jazz’ Feb. 19

8 p.m. Friday, Feb. 19

Cohan Center (Bldg. 6)

A vast range of today’s jazz music will be on display at the annual “Just Jazz” concert, presented by Cal Poly’s University Jazz Bands. The concert will feature Cal Poly’s best student jazz musicians in two big bands and two jazz combinations. Buy your tickets here

 

Arab Music Ensemble to Perform with Guest Artists

8 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 20

Performing Arts Center (Bldg. 6)

The Cal Poly Arab Music Ensemble and guest artists will perform a diverse program of music and dance from the Eastern Mediterranean region. Critically acclaimed guest artists will include Egyptian violinist Adel Eskander, Jordanian qanun player Mousa Nasser, and Egyptian percussionist Mohamed Radi. Cal Poly Music Department ethnomusicologist Ken Habib will direct the 25-member ensemble. Buy your tickets here

 

Jeannette Walls – ‘The Glass Castle’ (Cal Poly Arts)

3 p.m. Sunday, Feb. 21

Cohan Center (Bldg. 6)

Walls will discuss her memoir, “The Glass Castle”, which spent more than six years on the New York Times Bestseller list and sold more than 4.5 million copies. Walls will share life anecdotes as well as overcoming “demons” throughout your life. Purchase tickets here
