The Capitol Steps: ‘What to Expect When You’re Electing’ (Cal Poly Arts)

The Capitol Steps are back just in time to make sense of November’s election nonsense. Democrats and Republicans alike will be slighted when these former DC staffers hold both sides accountable in their fresh new songfest, with plenty of satire and sass.

CLA Speaks: ‘Privileges: Phallogocentrism Revisited’

Dr. Steven Miller of University of Buffalo, SUNY, will give a presentation examining psychoanalytic phallogocentrism and how those patterns repeat in contemporary queer fiction.This event is free and open to the public. Learn more or contact Ryan Hatch


Henry Horenstein: Life in Pictures
6:30 – 8:30 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 25
Constructions Innovations Center (Bldg. 186), Room C303

American photographer and filmmaker Henry Horenstein will show a sample of his photographs and films and tell the stories behind the images. Horenstein has published over thirty books, including “Animalia,” “Honky Tonk” and “Show.” He also published some of the most widely-used instructional texts in the field of analogue and digital photography. This event is free and open to the public.

Speak Up! Responding to Everyday Bigotry Workshop
3 – 4 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 26

The Office of University Diversity and Inclusivity is hosting a workshop on combating bigotry. Participants will understand the impact of everyday bigotry, explore barriers to responding to everyday bigotry, and develop and practice ways to respond. Conversations with Palm Theatre Founder, Jim Dee
4 – 6:30 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 26
UU (Bldg. 65), Room 204


Jim Dee, Palm Theatre owner and founder, will talk about the power of film to personalize stories of social struggle and injustice, as well as provoke change. Dee will also discuss how film can make the political personal. Following the discussion, there will be a screening of the 1948 Italian film, “Bicycle Thieves.” This event is free and open to the public. 


‘VISIBLE’ with Dr. Paul Leonardi
4 – 5:30 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 27

Dr. Paul Leonardi of UC Santa Barbara will give his presentation “Visible: How Spying, Eavesdropping and Self-Promotion Can Lead to Innovation in the Digital Age.” In the talk,
he will cover the positive and negative effects of workplace visibility through social media and explains that increasing social transparency is changing organizations and those who work for them.

Observe Guest Choreographer Ryan Corriston

Modern dance choreographer Ryan Corriston from James Madison University is creating a new work for the Orchesis Dance Company to be performed in their annual concert this January. He will be holding an open rehearsal, in which visitors are invited to observe all or a portion of the rehearsal. For more information, contact Christy Chand.

Cal Poly Choirs Fall Concert: ‘New Beginnings…New Horizons’
8 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 29
Cohan Center, PAC (Bldg. 6)


PolyPhonics, the University Singers and the Early Music Ensemble will present their fall concert, which begins conductor Tim Davies’ final year as director of choral activities
and vocal students at Cal Poly. In his honor, concerts this year will follow the theme “A Year of Thanksgiving.” The three choirs will sing a wide variety of works, ranging from an Israeli folk song to well-known spirituals by Beethoven. Learn more


Hit Musical ‘Once’ (Cal Poly Arts)
7 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 30
Cohan Center, PAC (Bldg. 6)


Winner of eight 2012 Tony Awards, including Best Musical, “Once” features an ensemble of actor/musicians who play their instruments onstage. They tell the tale of a Dublin street musician who’s on the verge of giving up on his dream when he meets a young woman who takes interest in his music.
