Cal Poly to Present Arthur Miller’s ‘The Crucible’ Feb. 25-27, March 3-5

Cal Poly’s Theatre and Dance Department will present Arthur Miller’s “The Crucible”at 8 p.m. Thursday through Saturday, Feb. 25-27 and March 3-5, in the Spanos Theatre on campus.

This suspenseful examination of the Salem Witch Trials explores the political and economic factors, vendettas and desires that sparked the infamous witch hunt instigated by a group of teenage girls. Miller’s classic play considers a community divided and the pursuit of individual integrity within a landscape of compromise.

“I am drawn to the way Miller constructs a narrative about humanity and hysteria that spoke directly to its original McCarthy-era audience” said Cal Poly theatre Professor and Director Heidi Nees. “Miller’s assessment that ‘the play has lessons for our own time’ rings true even today.”

“The Crucible” features the work of Theatre and Dance Department faculty and staff members Thomas J. Bernard, costume designer; Sarah Bryan, costume shop supervisor; Pegi Marshall, set and lighting designer; and Clint Bryson, technical director.

The production will also feature projection work by students from the Liberal Arts and Engineering Studies program and lobby displays by graduate students in the History Department. About 60 students from a variety of majors across campus contributed to the production through construction, backstage work, research, design, management and performance.

Tickets are $20 for the public and $12 for students, Cal Poly faculty, staff and seniors. Parking is included in the ticket price.
