Cal Poly to Host Ninth Annual Ballroom Dance Competition

San Luis Obispo County’s biggest dance competition returns.

The Cal Poly Ballroom Dance Club will host its ninth annual Mustang Ball ballroom and Latin DanceSport competition from 11 a.m. to 10 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 20, in the Multi-Activity Center in the Recreation Center on campus. The public is welcome to enter or attend the competition.

The competition will showcase local and visiting dancers in international and American style ballroom dances with six levels of competition, from newcomer to the advanced open-level events. The competition also includes nightclub dances such as Salsa, Hustle, Argentine Tango, and Lindy Hop Swing, as well as a formation team competition and collegiate team match. Amateur dancers of all levels and ages are invited to compete.

Professional Latin competitors Maksym Kapitanchuk and Elena Krifuks will be featured in a showcase event.

The event is one of the largest annual dance competitions in San Luis Obispo County. Last year’s competition drew more than 200 competitors from teams across California, Arizona and Nevada.

“We are excited to invite the dance community back to our annual Mustang Ball,” said club President Sophia Conn. “We’ve been working hard to improve the event, and I’m excited to see both familiar and new faces at the competition.”

Admission is $7 in advance, $10 at the door, and free for Cal Poly students with a valid ID.
