Cal Poly Gallery to Feature Graphic Designer Tad Carpenter Feb. 19-Mar. 18

Cal Poly’s University Art Gallery will present the work of Tad Carpenter, internationally acclaimed graphic designer, Friday, Feb. 19 through Friday, March 18.

Carpenter will open the exhibit with a talk at 5 p.m. Feb. 19 in the Agricultural Engineering Building (No. 8), Room 123, on campus. A reception will follow in the gallery, located on the ground floor of the Dexter Building (No. 34).

The exhibit will feature the design work of Carpenter Collective in Kansas City. A variety of Carpenter’s work will be on display, including logos, posters, books, sketches, fan flags and more.

“Tad’s work ethic and production of design across such a broad spectrum of products and clients should be quite inspirational for anyone attending his talk,” said Garet Zook, coordinator of the University Art Gallery. “Studying the way in which he approaches his creative process is a learning experience not just for graphic designers but for any imaginative person.”

Carpenter is a designer, illustrator, author and teacher based in Kansas City. His father is an illustrator and has been a creative director for Hallmark Cards for nearly 40 years, and his mother is a well-known fiber artist. Carpenter is married to a designer, Jessica Carpenter, who is his partner at their studio, Carpenter Collective.

Carpenter Collective’s overall approach to branding, strategy and design has provided them the opportunity to work with clients such as Target, Macy’s, Coca-Cola, Ray-ban, Nick Jr., MTV and Adobe.

Carpenter’s work has appeared in numerous publications, and he has written and illustrated more than a dozen children’s books. He has also taught graphic design at the University of Kansas since 2009.

Admission to the University Art Gallery is free. It is open 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. Tuesday through Saturday.
