Cal Poly Symphony to Feature Student Soloists in March 6 Concert

The talents of student soloists will be showcased and celebrated at the Cal Poly Symphony’s Winter Concert at 3 p.m. Sunday, March 6, in Harman Hall in the Performing Arts Center’s Christopher Cohan Center on campus.

The Student Soloist Showcase will include performances by three instrumentalists and two vocalists, all winners of the Music Department’s Solo Competition in November.

The student instrumentalists are: Stephen Jue, who will will perform York Bowen's Viola Concerto in C minor, first movement; Emelia Banninger, who will play Carl Maria von Weber’s Bassoon Concerto in F major, third movement; and Mario Ojeda, who will perform Felix Mendelssohn’s Violin Concerto, first movement.

The vocalists are Kelly O’Shea, who will sing “Steal Me, Sweet Thief” from Gian Carlo Menotti’s “The Old Maid and the Thief,” and Chris Wall, who will perform “Pietà, Signore,” an aria attributed to Alessandro Stradella.

All the soloists are music majors except Jue, who is a graduate student in the biomedical engineering department.

The concert program will also include Jean Sibelius’ Symphony No. 2 in D major, Op. 43.

Music Department faculty member David Arrivée will conduct the program.

Tickets are $12 and $14 for the public and $9 and $12 for students. Pricing includes all Performing Arts Center fees, and event parking is sponsored by the PAC. A 10 percent discount is given to patrons who buy season tickets to four Music Department events through the Cal Poly Ticket Office; a 15 percent discount is given on tickets to five or more events.
