Campus Wide "13th" Documentary Screenings

This year's "Constitution Day" event will be is a day-long set of screenings and open discussions of the new documentary "13th". The film is about the 13th amendment to the constitution, which states that "Neither slavery nor involuntary servitude except as a punishment for crime whereof the party shall have been duly convicted, shall exist within the United States, or any place subject to their jurisdiction." The film outlines very powerfully how this has led to "From slave to criminal with one amendment".

The event, sponsored by OUDI, the College of Liberal Arts, and a number of CLA Departments (Ethnic Studies, History, Political Science, Social Sciences, and Women & Gender Studies) takes place on Thursday, November 3rd

Film screenings will take place in 38-114 at 8:30 AM, 11:00 AM, and 2:00 PM, and at 6:00 PM in 14-239

Discussions are scheduled after the 11:00 AM and 2:00 PM screenings, at 1:00 PM and 4:00 PM, respectively, in 38-114.

Constitution Day honors the anniversary of the signing of the U.S. government’s founding document and was officially celebrated on Sept. 17. The bill creating Constitution Day was authored by Sen. Robert C. Byrd (D-West Virginia) and passed in the fall of 2005. The law requires colleges receiving federal funds to provide educational programming to promote the Constitution. Because Sept. 17
falls before classes begin, Cal Poly presents it Constitution Day programming in the Fall quarter.
