Band Fraternity Receives National Award

Kappa Kappa Psi, the national honorary band fraternity, has awarded Cal Poly’s Iota Pi chapter its 2013-15 Leadership Award.

The honor was given to 20 chapters across the country, including those at Indiana University, Louisiana State University, and the University of Washington.

Recipients are acknowledged for demonstrating an extraordinary level of commitment to their band programs and to the purposes and values of Kappa Kappa Psi. Representatives from the winning chapters are invited to present at the 2015 National Convention for the William A. Scroggs Founder’s Trophy, which is awarded to the nation’s top chapter.

Cal Poly’s Iota Pi chapter has received this award seven times since 1999, a distinction only matched by the University of Michigan and West Virginia University.

Established in 1992, Iota Pi is made up of Cal Poly students dedicated to promoting and aiding the band program through service, leadership and community outreach. Iota Pi has 68 members and is involved in Cal Poly’s Music Department and with campuswide and community projects. Chloe Cruz, a fourth-year political science major, is the current chapter president.

Kappa Kappa Psi is a co-ed honorary service fraternity established in 1919 at what is now Oklahoma State University. Kappa Kappa Psi promotes the advancement of college and university bands through dedicated service and support to bands, comprehensive education, leadership opportunities, and recognition for the benefit of its members and society.

There are nearly 6,000 active members of Kappa Kappa Psi in more than 200 university chapters with more than 50,000 alumni. For more information, visit http://www.kkpsi.org/.
