Cal Poly to Present All-State Music Festival Concert April 19

The Cal Poly Music Department will host the Cal Poly All-State Festival Concert, featuring some of the state’s best high school musicians, at 2:30 p.m. Sunday, April 19, in the Performing Arts Center’s Harman Hall.

Dave Eshelman, trombonist, composer, big band leader, recording artist, and jazz educator, will be the Festival Jazz Band director. His music has been performed by the bands of Joe Henderson, Don Ellis and Stan Kenton. Eshelman has performed as the featured soloist with Joe Henderson, Tito Puente, Gerald Wilson, Ray Brown, and the Full Faith and Credit Big Band. Eshelman also served as director of jazz studies at Cal State East Bay for many years.

The Festival Wind Orchestra will be conducted by husband-and-wife team Heidi Johanna Miller and James Patrick Miller. Heidi Miller is an adjunct assistant professor of music at Gustavus Adolphus College in St. Peter, Minn., where she conducts the Brass Choir and Woodwind Choir and teaches courses in music education. James Miller is the Douglas Nimmo endowed chair in music at Gustavus Adolphus College. He conducts the Gustavus Wind Orchestra. Previously he was director of wind studies at the University of Massachusetts in Amherst. Both conductors earned Doctor of Musical Arts degrees, studying with maestro Craig Kirchhoff at the University of Minnesota.

The concert will also feature the winner of the festival’s solo competition, accompanied by pianist and Cal Poly Music Department faculty member Susan Azaret Davies.

Tickets to the concert are $12 and $14 for the public and $9 and $12 for senior citizens and students. Pricing includes all Performing Arts Center fees, and event parking is sponsored by the PAC. Tickets are sold at the Cal Poly Ticket office between noon and 6 p.m. Tuesday through Saturday. To order by phone, call SLO-4TIX (756-4849).

The Music Department offers a 10 percent discount to patrons who buy season tickets to four of its events through the Cal Poly Ticket Office; a 15 percent discount is given on tickets to five or more events.

The concert is sponsored by Cal Poly’s Music Department, College of Liberal Arts, and Instructionally Related Activities program. For more information, call the Music Department at 805-756-2406.
