Cal Poly Alumna to Lead May 30 Workshop on STEM Students Creating Social Change

Cal Poly alumna Devon Buddan will lead a workshop, “Medicine, Race and Gender: A STEM Students for Social Change Workshop” from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Friday, May 30, in Room 204 in the University Union on campus.

Buddan will address what it means to be a student who faces social, educational and/or economic barriers to careers in science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM), with a particular focus on pre-medical pathways. The workshop is intended to provide a safe space for students to discuss their experiences in college and beyond and to develop ideas about how STEM students can participate in change on and off campus.

Buddan holds a bachelor’s degree in comparative ethnic studies from Cal Poly’s College of Liberal Arts. She is enrolled in the pre-health studies certificate program at Cal State East Bay and plans to attend medical school. She will discuss aspects of her own career path during the course of the presentation.

The workshop is sponsored by the statewide Louis Stokes Alliance for Minority and Underrepresented Student Participation (LSAMP) Program and Cal Poly’s Student Academic Services’ Connections for Academic Success Program and Partners ProgramCross Cultural CenterCollege of Science & Mathematics’ Pre-Health Advising, and the Biological SciencesEthnic Studies, and Kinesiology departments.

The LSAMP Program is dedicated to increasing the number of students from underrepresented groups that graduate from the California State University system with degrees in STEM disciplines. LSAMP is supported by the National Science Foundation Grant No. HRD-0802628 and the CSU Chancellor's Office and coordinated by Cal Poly’s Center for Excellence in STEM Education.

The event is free and open to the public. Lunch will be provided.
