Cal Poly's University Jazz Bands Present 'Just Jazz' March 15
The challenge and excitement of improvisation will be on display by Cal Poly’s University Jazz Bands at their annual Just Jazz concert at 8 p.m. Saturday, March 15, in Spanos Theatre on campus.
“Expect the unexpected,” says Cal Poly Director of Jazz Studies Paul Rinzler. "Because jazz is improvised, even the musicians themselves can be surprised by what they come up with on the spur of the moment. Some of the best and most memorable moments from past University Jazz Band concerts have been things that no one could have imagined beforehand."
The concert will feature a wide range of jazz styles, from the traditional to the innovative. The program will include student compositions and pieces by great jazz masters. The blues, mainstream jazz, hip-hop, funk, and progressive styles will all be heard.
The bands will range in size from two big bands that have 18 musicians each to smaller, more intimate jazz combos.
Tickets to the concert are $12 for the public and $9 for students, senior citizens and Jazz Federation members. Pricing includes all Performing Arts Center fees, and event parking is now sponsored by the PAC. Tickets are sold at the Performing Arts Ticket office between noon and 6 p.m. Tuesday through Saturday. To order by phone, call SLO-4TIX (756-4849).
The Music Department offers a 10 percent discount to patrons who buy season tickets to four of its events through the Performing Arts Ticket Office; a 15 percent discount is given on tickets to five or more events.
The concert is sponsored by Cal Poly’s Music Department, College of Liberal Arts, and Instructionally Related Activities program. For more information, call the Music Department at 805-756-2406.
