Cal Poly Accepting Submissions for Al Landwehr Creative Writing Contest

Cal Poly’s English Department is accepting submissions for the annual Al Landwehr Creative Writing Contest.

Entries may be submitted in a PDF or Word (.doc) format and must be submitted via email by noon Friday, Feb. 7.  Winners will be notified by phone or email.

Any student enrolled at Cal Poly may submit poems or stories. Past winners have included students from all colleges at Cal Poly.

The contest is named after nationally published fiction writer and Emeritus English Professor Al Landwehr, who started the contest in 1970. The contest has resulted in numerous winners who have gone on to distinguished careers in a variety of writing and publishing fields.

First-, second- and third-place winners will receive cash prizes, and the entries will be published in Cal Poly English Department’s literary annual, Byzantium. Editor’s choice selections will also appear in Byzantium.

For contest rules, including length limits and submission guidelines, visit the English Department website.

To submit entries:

  • Each entry must have a pseudonym noted as the author on the work.
  • Use the same pseudonym on all entries from the same person.
  • The email used to submit the entry must include the author’s real name, pseudonym, address, phone number and email address, so the author can be contacted if the entry is chosen as one of the winners.
  • Poetry and fiction entries must be submitted separately.
  • To submit fiction, email entries to engl-byz-fiction@calpoly.edu; for poetry, email entries to engl-byz-poetry@calpoly.edu.
