Trombonist Ko-ichiro Yamamoto to Perform with Cal Poly’s Wind Bands March 9

World-renowned trombonist Ko-ichiro Yamamoto will be the guest solo artist at Cal Poly’s Wind Bands Winter concert at 3 p.m. Sunday, March 9, in Harman Hall in the Performing Arts Center’s Christopher Cohan Center.

Yamamoto is one of the foremost Japanese trombonists of his generation, currently acting as the principal trombonist for the Seattle Symphony and the Saito-Kinen Orchestra. He is also on the faculty at the University of Washington School of Music. Active as a soloist, recitalist, chamber music performer, and clinician, Yamamoto has performed with ensembles from around the world, including the New York Philharmonic and Metropolitan Opera Chamber Orchestra.

The Wind Ensemble will accompany Yamamoto in a performance of the Concerto for Trombone by Danish composer Launy Grøndahl. The Wind Ensemble will also perform Julie Giroux’s “La Mezquita de Córdoba” and the final movement of Charles Ives’ Symphony No. 2.

The Wind Ensemble will also perform a movement from Joel Puckett’s “The Shadow of Sirius.” The work features an antiphonal flute section and a solo flute part performed by Doug Gallatin. Gallatin earned his bachelor’s degree in computer science from Cal Poly and is enrolled in its master’s program. A native of San Jose, he has been performing with the Cal Poly bands since arriving as a first-year student in 2009.

The Wind Orchestra will begin the concert with Gustav Holst’s First Suite in E flat. Their performance will also include the Daniel Bukvich composition “Voodoo.” The Wind Orchestra will conclude their portion of the concert with Eric Whitacre’s epic work “Ghost Train.”

Director of Bands Andrew McMahan and Associate Director of Bands Christopher J. Woodruff will conduct the concert.

Tickets to the concert are $12 and $14 for the public and $9 and $12 for senior citizens and students. Pricing includes all Performing Arts Center fees, and event parking is sponsored by the PAC.
