Tenor Christopher Campbell to Give Vocal Master Class Dec. 2 at Cal Poly

Tenor Christopher Campbell, who has a career in opera and oratorio, will present a vocal master class at 6 p.m. Tuesday, Dec. 2, in the Pavilion of the Performing Arts Center’s Christopher Cohan Center.

Several leading voice students in Cal Poly’s Music Department will perform and be critiqued. Staff member Paul Woodring will accompany the students on piano.

Campbell has performed throughout the U.S. with such respected opera companies as Glimmerglass Opera, New York City Opera National Company, Opera Pacific, San Francisco Lyric Opera, and Long Beach Opera, among others.

Campbell’s oratorio repertoire includes the works of Bach, Berlioz, Beethoven, Dubois, Handel, Haydn, Honegger, Mendelssohn and Schubert. As guest soloist, Campbell has performed at the Hollywood Bowl, Walt Disney Concert Hall, Ambassador Auditorium, Royce Hall at UCLA, and the Crystal Cathedral.  His signature operatic roles include Rodolfo in “La Bohème,” Don Jose in “Carmen,” Alfredo in “La Traviata,” Manrico in “Il Trovatore” and Cavaradossi in “Tosca.”

The Fort Lauderdale, Fla., Sun-Sentinel said he “sang with a warm, easily produced tone” in his performance as Pinkerton in “Madama Butterfly.” Theater Notes said “he delivered the famed aria ‘Vesti la giubba' with heart breaking emotion” in his performance as Canio in “Pagliacci.”

Campbell will perform with the Cal Poly Symphony in its Dec. 7 concert, “Symphony at the Opera” in the Performing Arts Center's Christopher Cohan Center.

The Dec. 2 master class is free and open to the public and is sponsored by the Cal Poly Music Department, College of Liberal Arts, and the Tevis Fund for Visiting Artists. For more information on the class, call the Music Department at 805-756-2406.
