Cal Poly to Host Film Industry Professionals Feb. 5 and 11

Cal Poly will host film industry professionals Tom Provost and Mark Stolaroff as part of the Media Arts and Technologies Visiting Expert presentations Feb. 5 and 11.

Stolaroff will address issues pertaining to digital filmmaking in “The Art and Science of No-Budget Filmmaking,” from 4 to 6:30 p.m. Wednesday, Feb. 5, in the Advanced Technology Lab (ATL), Building 7. Provost will speak on screenwriting and screenplays in “Cinema Language: The Art of Storytelling,” from 4 to 6:30 p.m. Tuesday, Feb. 11, in the ATL. A discussion will follow each lecture.

The presentations act as supplements to the master classes both lecturers are scheduled to lead through February.

Stolaroff is an independent producer and founding partner of Antic Pictures, a Los Angeles-based company that produces high-quality, low-budget digital features. Many of the films Stolaroff has helped create, such as “Farah Goes Bang,” “The House That Jack Built,” and “Pig” have been accepted for screening at film festivals across the globe. “Farah Goes Bang” received the Nora Ephron Award and “Pig” garnered 10 awards, including seven Best Feature awards.

Stolaroff has taught film classes at UCLA extension, the Maine Film Workshop and The Learning Annex; spoken to audiences, including film festivals, around the world; and been published in Scientific American, Filmmaker, Sight & Sound, Film Festival Reporter and Film Arts Magazine.

Provost is an award-winning writer, director and editor from Los Angeles and graduate screenwriting professor at Pepperdine University. His most recent directorial work “The Presence,” stars Academy Award-winning actress Mira Sorvino.

Provost’s other projects include the screenplay, “Under Suspicion,” starring Morgan Freeman and Gene Hackman. Provost has also directed commercials and edited reality television shows including “The Bachelor” and “The Apprentice.”

Both lectures are free and open to the public. Funding for these events is made possible by the CSU Entertainment Industry Initiative Visiting Fellows Program and the College of Liberal Arts.
