Three Cal Poly Professors Accepted to National Coleman Fellows Program

Three Cal Poly professors have been accepted into the Coleman Foundation Faculty Entrepreneurship Fellows program, which aims to extend self-employment education across 19 university and college campuses throughout the U.S.

The Coleman Foundation is committing nearly $500,000 for fellowship grants and program support at campuses involved in the 2013-14 program.

Mary Glick, chair and associate professor of journalism in the College of Liberal Arts; Lorraine Donegan, associate professor of graphic communication in the College of Liberal Arts; and Lynn Metcalf, chair and professor of marketing in the Orfalea College of Business, were selected to participate through the Cal Poly Center for Innovation and Entrepreneurship.

This marks the second time Cal Poly has been awarded this distinction. The Coleman Fellows program allows faculty members access to their peers across the country through multiple platforms of engagement. Cal Poly fellows are expected to participate in program-wide activities, including monthly interactive Web-enabled meetings with fellows on other campuses and attendance at the Collegiate Entrepreneurs Organization Conference Nov. 1–3 in Chicago.

“Participating in this program will help fulfill the Cal Poly Center for Innovation and Entrepreneurship’s mission of opening the world of entrepreneurial opportunity to Cal Poly students and faculty members and promoting entrepreneurial activity, scholarship and dialogue across the university,” said Jonathan York, associate professor of entrepreneurship and director and founder of the Cal Poly Center for Innovation and Entrepreneurship.

Last year’s inductees, who remain in the program as second-year fellows, include Bob Crockett, director of General Engineering in the College of Engineering; Enrica Lovaglio Costello in the Art and Design Department in the College of Liberal Arts; and Umut Toker in the City and Regional Planning Department in the College of Architecture and Environmental Design.

Fellows are typically professors from outside the business school at their institutions. They develop courses and lead projects in support of entrepreneurship education as a way to inspire students in non-business disciplines to gain self-employment skills and experience.

Professors Glick, Donegan and Metcalf will create new entrepreneurial courses in their academic discipline that advance self-employment and entrepreneurship, modify existing courses and/or develop experiential, co-curricular entrepreneurship education programs linking to curricular elements.

Last year’s fellows will continue their programs and projects from the 2012-13 academic year. All fellows will be guided by York.
