Theatre Major Wins Young Scholar Award from Southeastern Theatre Conference

Theatre major Gabbie Koizumi has won the 2013 Young Scholar's Award in the Undergraduate Category from the Southeastern Theatre Conference (SETC) with her paper, Living through Lucy: An Analysis of “Lucy Long” and the Song’s Social Implications in Antebellum America, which she wrote for TH 320: Black Theatre in spring quarter 2012.

As the winner of this award Gabbie has been invited to present her work at the SETC conference this spring and will receive a $225 cash prize, free conference registration, free SETC membership for one year, and a ticket to the States Luncheon.  

Theatre Professor Virginia Anderson stated "This is a remarkable achievement, though certainly well-deserved. Gabbie's paper was tirelessly researched, carefully crafted, and clearly written. Just as importantly, her piece opens the door to others for future scholarship concerning African American theatre history and popular entertainment."

Gabbie is a Theatre major with minors in English, History, and Women's and Gender Studies; each of these areas of study contributed to her work.
