Cal Poly Symphony to Perform Holst’s 'The Planets' and Works by Vaughan Williams on Nov. 24

The Cal Poly Symphony will perform music from early 20th-century England at its Fall Concert at 3 p.m. Sunday, Nov. 24, in Harman Hall in the Performing Arts Center's Christopher Cohan Center.

The centerpiece of the concert is a performance of Gustav Holst's "The Planets," a musical and psychological journey from the brute force of "Mars: the Bringer of War" to the hushed serenity of "Neptune: the Mystic."

Paired with this monumental work is music by Holst's lifelong friend, Ralph Vaughan Williams. Violinist Brynn Albanese will join the orchestra to perform "The Lark Ascending," an evocative and lyrical fantasy inspired by a poem of the same name by George Meredith. The orchestra will begin the concert with Vaughan Williams' "English Folk Song Suite."

Tickets to the concert are $12 and $14 for the public and $9 and $12 for senior citizens and students. Pricing includes all Performing Arts Center fees, and event parking is sponsored by the PAC. Tickets are sold at thePerforming Arts Ticket office between noon and 6 p.m. Tuesday through Saturday. To order by phone, call SLO-4TIX (756-4849).

A 10 percent discount is given to patrons who buy season tickets to four Music Department events through the Performing Arts Ticket Office; a 15 percent discount is given on tickets to five or more events.

The concert is sponsored by Cal Poly's College of Liberal Arts, Music Department, and Instructionally Related Activities program. For more information, call the Music Department at 805-756-2406.
