Journalism Faculty to Present Paper on Cultural Monuments and Media in Thailand

Three faculty members from the Journalism Department will present a paper titled “Right of Way: Problems at the Intersection of Cultural Institutions and News Media Under Copyright Law” at the second annual International Conference on Journalism and Mass Communications in Phuket, Thailand, on Oct. 28 and 29.

In the paper, professors Dan Eller, Richard Gearhart and Bill Loving address conflicts that arise when news organizations release stories about the holdings of cultural institutions that want to limit exposure to the copyrighted material.

Each of the authors brought their unique perspectives to the paper. Eller is the former director of communications for Hearst Castle; Gearhart, co-anchor of the morning news show on KSBY-TV; and Loving, an expert in media law and copyright. The Global Science and Technology Forum (GSTF) Journal of Law and Social Sciences has accepted the paper for publication.

In addition to the conference presentation, Loving has been selected to give the keynote address with the topic “As Water is to Life, Journalism and Democracy.”
