Theatre Students Place 1st and 2nd in National Black Theatre Competition

Theatre major and history minor Gabbie Koizumi and English major and theatre minor Zoie Daniels took first AND second place respectively in the undergraduate division of the 2012 S. Randolph Edmonds Young Scholars Competition sponsored by the Black Theatre Network.

First place winner Koizumi submitted a paper entitled "Living through Lucy: An analysis of 'Lucy Long' and the Song's Social Implications in Antebellum America" and was awarded a $250 prize. Second place winner Daniels' paper was entitled "Say it With Lights: Telling it Straight on the Great White Way" and received a $100 prize. Both will be invited to deliver their papers at the 2012 Black Theatre Network Conference in Atlanta to be held July 27 - July 30. Winners will participate in a "Shaping the Research for Presentation" workshop and a special reception in their honor at the conference. Winning papers will be published in the conference edition of BTNews. Winners will also receive a free one-year membership in the Black Theatre Network and complimentary registration and one night stay in the conference hotel.

Professor Virginia Anderson, who teaches TH320 Black Theatre and served as their faculty sponsor, said, "Their awards were well-deserved; their papers were meticulously researched and beautifully written. I couldn't be more proud of them for representing Cal Poly so well in both process and product!"
