Computer System Requirements
Most coursework in the College of Liberal Arts can be completed on a modern laptop. You do not need a top-of-the-line machine for writing, research, Canvas, presentations, and video meetings. If you already own a computer, start there. In many cases, it is more than enough.
Department-specific requirements
Some programs and courses (especially design, visual storytelling, audio, and video production) can benefit from more memory and storage. If your major has specific expectations, follow the department guidance first
Quick checklist for most students
If you are buying a new laptop and want something that will feel comfortable for your full time at Cal Poly, aim for:
- Operating system: Windows or macOS (current, supported version)
- Processor: Intel Core i5 or AMD equivalent, or Apple silicon equivalent
- Memory: 16 GB RAM
- Storage: 512 GB SSD
- Webcam and mic: built-in is fine (you will use these)
- Wireless: reliable Wi-Fi support (Wi‑Fi 5 or newer is typical on modern devices)
If you already have a computer, you are likely fine if your computer:
- Runs a supported version of Windows or macOS
- Can handle video meetings, web browsing with multiple tabs, and standard coursework tools
- Has enough free storage for class files (and you are comfortable using cloud storage)
If it struggles with video calls, runs out of storage constantly, or becomes slow with normal multitasking, that is usually a sign you would benefit from more RAM and an SSD.
Recommendations by what you will do
Writing, reading, and research-focused coursework
This is the majority of use cases in the College of Liberal Arts.
- 16 GB RAM
- 256–512 GB SSD (512 GB recommended)
- Any modern i5 or equivalent
- Integrated graphics is fine
Creative production (design, photo, audio, video)
If your coursework includes creative software, editing, or large media files, consider:
- 16–32 GB RAM
- 1 TB SSD (or 512 GB plus an external drive)
- A newer processor tier (still no need for a gaming laptop unless your courses explicitly require it)
Tablets and Chromebooks
Tablets and Chromebooks can be great companions for note taking and reading, but they may not run all required desktop applications. If you choose one, plan to also have access to a Windows or macOS computer for full flexibility.
Access and support
If you do not own the right device, you have a few options:
- Tech checkout / rentals: Device checkout options may be available for academic needs.
- Computer labs / virtual labs: Some specialized software may be available through campus computer labs or virtual access.
- Software access: Many commonly used tools are available to students through campus licensing.
- Bottom line: If you want one simple recommendation: a Windows or macOS laptop with 16 GB RAM and a 512 GB SSD is a solid, modern baseline for the College of Liberal Arts. If you are in a media-heavy program, prioritize more RAM and more storage over flashy extras.
