Luz Calvo: ‘Decolonize Your Diet’

Luz Calvo, professor of ethnic studies at CSU East Bay, will present her talk “Decolonize Your Diet”, which redefines what is meant by “traditional” Mexican food by reaching back through hundreds of years of history to reclaim heritage crops as a source of protection from modern diseases.

 

Katie Hinde and the Science of Mothers Milk

Agriculture Engineering (Bldg. 8), Room 123

Katie Hinde, associate professor at Arizona State University’s School of Human Evolution and Social Change, will present her talk “Mother’s Milk in Evolutionary, Cultural, and Socio-Political Context.” By studying humans, monkeys and other mammals, Hinde has found that just as individuals vary in mothering “style,” the constituents in mother’s milk vary substantially. She will emphasize the role of socio-political institutions and cultural dynamics as essential considerations in approaching the science of motherhood.

 

CLA Speaks: 'Why Rhetoric Matters for Ecology'

Caroline Gottschalk Druschke is an assistant professor of writing & rhetoric and natural resources science at the University of Rhode Island. In her talk “Why Rhetoric Matters for Ecology: Building Cross-Disciplinary Collaborations for Better Communication, Science, and Decision-Making” she will discuss her research, which centers on public engagement with science, restoration of aquatic ecosystems, transdisciplinary collaboration and science communication.

 

‘Rethinking Bilingualism: The Rise of the Heritage Speaker’

Julio Torres, professor of Spanish applied linguistics at UC Irvine and affiliate faculty member at UCLA, will give a talk focusing on understanding bilingualism from a heritage speaker’s point of view. He will also present current research on the topic and stress the importance of Spanish heritage programs in the U.S.

 

'Google Your Way to A Great Job'

Graduate students can participate and learn how to use a powerful research process to write a better cover letter and resume, and to ace a job interview. Lunch will be provided.

 

Baker Forum: Diversity in Higher Education and the Workforce

Cohan Center, PAC (Bldg. 6)

Established in 2002 by Warren and Carly Baker, the Baker Forum gives attention to the social and economic roles and responsibilities that polytechnic universities have. This year, four panelists will seek to create a deeper understanding of some challenges found in education and in industry regarding diversity. A Capella Ensemble: That’s the Key

8 p.m. Friday and Saturday, May 6 – 7

Davidson Music Center (Bldg. 45), Room 218

That’s the Key will present a Spring Concert. The ensemble is made up of 14 students from various majors who sing original arrangements of popular music. Admission is $5 at the door; all proceeds benefit the group’s competition and travel fees for next year.

 

Mahler’s Symphony No. 2

Music faculty member Thomas Davies will guest conduct a 90-piece orchestra, a 160-member combined Cal Poly and San Luis Obispo Master Chorale, faculty member and mezzo-soprano Jacalyn Kreitzer, and soprano Elissa Johnson. Find out more information about the concert here.
