Cal Poly Symphony and Choirs to Present Fauré’s ‘Requiem’ and Tour Preview on June 4

The Cal Poly Symphony and Cal Poly Choirs will perform Fauré’s “Requiem” and a preview of the orchestra’s repertoire from its upcoming Central Europe tour at 8 p.m. Saturday, June 4, in Harman Hall in the Performing Arts Center’s Christopher Cohan Center.

The concert will open with American, Austrian, Czech and Hungarian music to celebrate the Cal Poly Symphony’s tour to Central Europe in June. Works include Aaron Copland’s “Variations on a Shaker Melody,” Antonín Dvořák’s “Slavonic Dance in G Minor,” Op. 46, No. 8, Johann Strauss’ waltz “Wiener Blut,” and Béla Bartók’s “Hungarian Pictures.”

After these orchestral works, the Cal Poly Choirs will join the symphony for a world premiere performance of faculty member Meredith Brammeier’s “Blow, Winds, Rage, Blow!” set to text from Shakespeare’s “King Lear.”

After intermission, the combined groups will perform one of Gabriel Fauré’s most-loved works, “Requiem,” Op. 48.

“This requiem is perhaps the most gentle in the repertoire,” said David Arrivée, conductor of the Cal Poly Symphony. “It is also one of the most beautiful. The harmonies that Fauré finds are simply delicious, and the writing for strings and choir is rich and vibrant.”

Tickets to the concert are $12 or $14 for the public and $9 or $12 for students. Pricing includes all Performing Arts Center fees, and event parking is sponsored by the PAC. Tickets are sold at the Cal Poly Ticket Office between noon and 6 p.m. Monday through Saturday. To order by phone, call SLO-4TIX (756-4849).

The concert is sponsored by Cal Poly's College of Liberal Arts, Music Department, and Instructionally Related Activities program. For more information, call the Music Department at 805-756-2406.
