Cal Poly Wind Bands to Perform in Concert with Guest Artists June 5
Saxophonist Laura Kramer and composer Antonio G. Barata, both Cal Poly music faculty members, will be the guest artists at the Wind Bands Spring Concert at 8 p.m. Friday, June 5, in Harman Hall in the Performing Arts Center’s Christopher Cohan Center.
The Wind Orchestra will perform “Sketches on a Tudor Psalm” by Fisher Tull, “Kindred Spirits” by Brian Balmages, and “Last Song” by Belgian composer Benjamin Haemhouts. The group will also celebrate the 100th anniversary of American composer Vincent Persichetti’s birth with a performance of his original work for concert band titled “Divertimento.”
The Wind Ensemble will accompany Kramer in the world premiere performance of her latest composition “That Takes Care ’a That,” a two-movement work for solo tenor saxophone and wind band. The Wind Ensemble will also perform the world premiere of Barata’s newest piece, “Leviathan,” as well as “Blue Shades” by Frank Ticheli and “Shortcut Home” by Dana Wilson.
Kramer, of Los Angeles, is active as a saxophonist, composer and music educator. She has performed at the CSU Fullerton New Music Festival, International Computer Music Conference 60x60 Concerts, North American Saxophone Alliance Conferences, SEAMUS National Conferences, and with the USC Contemporary Music Ensemble and World Saxophone Congress. She recently earned a Doctorate of Musical Arts in composition at USC, with concentrations in theory, saxophone and electroacoustic media. Kramer teaches saxophone at Cal Poly.
Music Professor Barata specializes in sound design, theory and composition. He is a regular consultant for acoustics, sound reinforcement and studio design. He is an active composer in the traditional genres and in the area of electroacoustic music, and his compositions have been performed by various musicians across the U.S. His compositions are most often inspired by environmental concerns, spiritual issues, and reflections on the human condition.
Director of Bands Andrew McMahan and Associate Director of Bands Christopher J. Woodruff will conduct the concert.
Tickets are $12 and $14 for the public, and $9 and $12 for seniors and students. Prices include all Performing Arts Center fees, and event parking is sponsored by the PAC.
