Afro-Cuban and Latin music specialist Wayne Wallace will be the guest trombone soloist to perform with Cal Poly’s best student jazz musicians in the Performing Arts Center’s Christopher Cohan Center at 8 p.m. Saturday, May 30.

A five-time Grammy nominee, Wallace is one of the world’s most respected performers of Latin jazz. He has performed with such Latin jazz greats as Tito Puente, Pete Escobedo, Sheila E. and John Santos.

Wallace has received rave reviews for his recordings with his Latin jazz ensemble. An accomplished arranger, educator and composer for film and television, he is known for the use of traditional forms and styles in combination with contemporary music.

He will appear with two Cal Poly big bands, composed of four trumpets, four trombones, five saxophones, a rhythm section, and vocalist. The bands will perform Duke Ellington’s “Caravan,” which was featured prominently in the 2014 movie “Whiplash.” They will also play “How Insensitive” by Antonio Carlos Jobim, “23 Degrees North — 82 Degrees West” by Stan Kenton’s Orchestra, and the jazz classic “Spain” by Chick Corea.

Two Cal Poly student jazz combos will also perform.

Tickets are $12 and $14 for the public and $9 and $12 for seniors and students. Pricing includes all Performing Arts Center fees, and event parking is sponsored by the PAC. Buy tickets at the Cal Poly Ticket Office from noon to 6 p.m.Tuesday through Saturday. To order by phone, call SLO-4TIX (756-4849).
