Cal Poly to Exhibit Work at Central Coast Book and Author Fair Sept. 20

A variety of books written by Central Coast authors on local topics will be on display at the Book and Author Fair from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Sunday, Sept. 20, at the SeaCrest Oceanfront Hotel in Pismo Beach, California.

The exhibit, sponsored by the Graphic Communication Institute at Cal Poly (GrCI), showcases the work of the GrCIPress, the publishing arm of the GrCI.

Among the books to be display will be:

  • “75 SLO City Sites: An Informative Self-guided Architectural Tour in Historic San Luis Obispo” by Patti Taylor and Suzette Lees -- Currently in its second printing, this book of photos and descriptions demonstrates why the architecture of the city of San Luis Obispo makes this area one of the most unique in the U.S.

  • “Anything but Dull: The Personal Letters of R. E. Jack - His Legacy from Maine to California 1985-1869” by Marilyn Darnell – This book sheds light on the life and times of San Luis Obispo forefather Robert Edgar Jack, for whom the San Luis Obispo Jack House is named, through personal letters describing his travels from the East Coast, during the Civil War, and finally to California.

  • “Folk Photography: Poems I’ve Never Written” by Joe Schwartz — This collection of photographs demonstrates the plight of the “have-nots” of America and how, according to Schwartz, “we can all get along regardless of race, religion nationality, or ethnic background.” The photos in the book will be the first and permanent exhibit at the new Smithsonian Institution Museum of African American History and Culture set to open in 2016.

  • “From Czernowitz to the German Order of Merit: A Memoir of Cultural History and Autobiography” by Bianca Rosenthal — This Cal Poly professor emeritus presents an account of her experiences during World War II Europe and her migration to the U.S.

  • “Lessons from the Range: Adventures of a Working Cowboy” by Gary Williams – This volume is penned by an acquaintance of Roy Rogers and Dale Evans. Williams, who practices the animal handling and training skills of the “old West” resides in San Miguel, Calif. He writes about his lifelong experiences of taming and training dogs and catching wild cattle.

  • “She Cried for Mother Russia: A Princess in San Luis Obispo” by Friedl Bell — In its second printing, this is an epic account of a Russian princess who escaped the Bolshevik Revolution of the early 20th century and found her way to San Luis Obispo, where she lived for more than 50 years.

The authors will be present to discuss their work and sign copies of the books. Books will be available for purchase. For more information about the Central Coast Book and Author Fair, call 550-4819 or visit the Central Coast Writer's Conference website.
