Charles Strong, Emeritus Professor in English Writes Introduction for Recent Publication

Marie Bashkirtseff
The diaries of Russian painter Marie Bashkirtseff
were a literary sensation in the Nineteenth
Century for their frankness.

Charles Strong, Emeritus Professor of English, has written the Introduction to The Journal of Marie Bashkirtseff (translated and edited by Katherine Kernberger), which has been published as an e-book by Fonthill Press. It is the largest selection of material from Marie's diaries in any language, and all other English editions are based on the bowdlerized French edition of 1887.

Marie died of tuberculosis when she was 25, but became an award-winning painter before her death. Her diaries, which she always felt should be published because, like Rousseau, she vowed to tell the exact truth about everything, became the literary sensation of the day and were mentioned by Shaw, Gladstone, and others. Strong has also been invited to submit a paper for an upcoming conference in Poltava, Ukraine this fall.
