In Fall 2022, Laura Bernard, a fourth-year English student with a minor in art history, studied abroad in Rome, Italy as part of the Cultural Experiences Abroad (CEA)/John Cabot University hybrid study abroad program.

Through this program, Bernard took classes through both the CEA Rome Center and at John Cabot University, an American University located in Rome.

“I always knew I wanted to study abroad because my dad studied in Rome when he was in college, so I knew I wanted to follow in his footsteps which has by far been my favorite part about being here,” Bernard said. “Plus, being an art history minor, Rome is where you want to be!”

While studying in Rome, Bernard not only took courses that counted towards her degree, but was able to indulge in other interests of hers such as the culture of food and wine in Italy, the history of the Italian mafia, art history in Rome and classical mythology. Bernard also made the most of her trip and traveled to Prague, Czech Republic; Bucharest, Romania; Santorini, Greece; London, England; Dublin, Ireland; and all over Italy.

In addition to her studies, Bernard worked remotely as the English Department’s social media intern. Even with a nine hour time difference, she was able to stay on top of her job duties by scheduling posts in advance and working odd hours.

“As the department's social media intern, I work to get the word out on all things regarding the English Department for students, alumni and faculty. I also try to cultivate a fun environment as much as I can while doing so. I often conduct interviews for staff or alumni bios and work on a lot of behind-the-scenes things as well,” Bernard said.

Finally, she adds that her biggest recommendation to other students studying abroad is to send newsletters and updates back home to keep friends and family updated on all of your amazing experiences.

“I have sent two already and everyone loves them! It’s a fun way to keep those close to you in the loop, because they are all wondering how your adventure is going!”
