#IAmCalPoly Exhibit to Open in Kennedy Library on May 9

The MultiCultural Center’s 2016 #IAmCalPoly exhibit will open Monday, May 9 in Kennedy Library (Bldg. 35), First Floor Community Gallery. This exhibit is a collection of photos and personal narratives of students, faculty and staff, highlighting the evolving diversity on campus. On Tuesday, May 10, there will be an Opening Reception from 4-6 p.m. in the Library’s Atrium. The exhibit will run until Friday, May 20.

 

Academy of American Poets Contest Deadline May 12

Cal Poly’s English Department’s 2016 Academy of American Poets contest will close Thursday, May 12, at 4 p.m. All Cal Poly students are eligible to enter and are asked to submit up to three poems totaling no more than 150 lines. Learn more here.

 

CLA Faculty and Staff Awards Nomination Deadline May 13

This Friday, May 13, is the deadline to submit nominations for the 2015-2016 CLA faculty and staff awards. There are ten awards available, all with a cash prize of $500. Awards will be presented at the college awards ceremony on Friday, June 3. Click here for more details.

CLA Speaks: ‘Eggs, Embryos, Women’ with Lisa Ikemoto

Professor Lisa Ikemoto is a Bioethics associate and faculty associate at UC Davis. In her talk “Eggs, Embryos, Women: Technology and the Reproductive Economy” she will discuss her research areas, including reproductive and genetic technology uses, healthcare disparities and public health law.

Prize-Winning Poet Wendy Barker

6 p.m. Thursday, May 12

Ag. Engineering (Bldg. 8), Room 123

Wendy Barker, poet-in-residence at the University of Texas at San Antonio and winner of numerous awards, will be reading from her award-winning book “One Blackbird at a Time.” The book focuses on the challenge of teaching the great works of literature to college students. After the reading, Barker will take questions about her writing and teaching.

 

CLA Speaks: ‘The Lingering Value of Technological Artifacts’

Erhart Agriculture (Bldg. 10), Room 223

Benjamin Hale, a professor in the Philosophy and Environmental Studies Departments at the University of Colorado, will give his talk on electronic waste and how it is associated with a huge range of environmental, health and justice problems. His presentation aims to address the reasons why we might hold value in our technological artifacts and offers some clarity on how to move forward with more successful e-waste programs.

 

Cal Poly Student Guitar Recital

Guitar students will perform selections for their Spring recital. This event is free and open to the public. Come enjoy great music!

 

Theatre & Dance Department Production: ‘Black Comedy’

Spanos Theatre (Bldg. 44)

In this madcap British farce, a lovesick artist looks to impress his fiancée’s father by borrowing art and antiques from an absentee neighbor. It’s the perfect plan until the lights go out! With characters literally in the dark, the audience is exposed to unexpected exploits and escapades. Learn more here.

 

W. Terrence Spiller Recital: Beethoven Piano Sonata Cycle

7:30 p.m. Friday, May 13

PAC Pavilion (Bldg. 6)

Spiller will begin his survey of the complete piano sonatas of Beethoven. This multi-year cycle starts off this Spring with a program of four sonatas: Opus 2 No. 3 in C major, Opus 26 in A-flat major, Opus 14 No. 2 in G major, and Opus 81a in E-flat major. Learn more here

 

David Cross – ‘Making America Great Again!’ (Cal Poly Arts)

7 p.m. Friday, May 13

Fremont Theatre, Downtown SLO

Actor and comedian David Cross brings his “Making America Great Again!” tour to the Fremont in downtown SLO, his first tour in five years. Famous for starring on the Emmy-winning comedy series “Arrested Development,” Cross has also been named one of Comedy Central’s “Top 100 Stand-Up Comedians of All Time.” Learn more here.
