German and Russian Conversation Tables Open

The German and Russian Conversations Tables are open to students who would like to learn a language or just listen to one being spoken. Meet other students interested in languages! Both meet at Julian’s Café in Kennedy Library (Bldg. 35) from 12:10-1 p.m. The Russian Table meets every other Wednesday (April 6 and 20, May 4 and 18, June 1). The German Table meets on opposite Wednesdays (April 13 and 27, May 11 and 25).

‘Uncle Ho Lives Forever Among Us: Time and Space in the Cult of Ho Chi Minh’

Hue Tam Ho Tai will lecture on the cult of Ho Chi Minh. Tai is the Kenneth T. Young Professor of Sino-Vietnamese History at Harvard University. She is the leading expert in Vietnamese history and has published numerous books and articles on millenarianism and peasant revolutions in Vietnam, early origins of Vietnamese anti-colonial ideologies, historical memory, and women's history.

 

‘Unmasking Diversity: Lessons for Institutions of Higher Learning’

6 – 7:30 p.m. Thursday, April 7

PAC Pavilion (Bldg. 6)

Gilda L. Ochoa, the Susan Currier Visiting Professor of Teaching Excellence for 2016, will give her keynote lecture. In this talk, Ochoa will synthesize her past experience teaching on race and higher education with her experience at Cal Poly to educate on these issues as well as mobilizing people to create change.

 

Cyber CSI II: ‘Apple vs. FBI – Encryption, Privacy, and Policy’

11 a.m. – noon, Thursday, April 7

Kennedy Library (Bldg. 35), Talk Lounge (Room 111H)

Zachary Peterson, Cal Poly assistant professor of Computer Science and a faculty member of our Cybersecurity Center, will present this talk on the implications of encrypting data on mobile devices and the challenges of maintaining data privacy in a digital age. This event is free and open to the public. Refreshments will be provided.

 

globalFEST on the Road – ‘Creole Carnival’ (Cal Poly Arts)

8 p.m. Friday, April 8

Spanos Theatre (Bldg. 44)

The “Creole Carnival Tour” honors the roots of African musical currents, crossed with a fusion of sounds from the Americas while celebrating the pre-Lent festival of Carnival. There will be a pre-show lecture in the Phillips Hall at 7 p.m. Learn more here

 

4th Annual Design & Dev Hackathon

Friday-Saturday, April 8-9

Bonderson Engineering Center (No. 197), Room 104

The Hackathon encourages Cal Poly students to pool their creativity and entrepreneurial spirit to develop an app, a website or another project that is intended to make life better for the campus and local communities. The event is free and open to students from all disciplines; registration is required. Registration is also required to attend the pitch presentations. Learn more here

 

PostSecret by Frank Warren (Cal Poly Arts)

3 p.m. Sunday, April 10

Cohan Center (Bldg. 6)

This multimedia event is based on Warren’s PostSecret Project, a postcard collection of highly personal secrets mailed to him anonymously from around the world.These secrets contain everything from deep family secrets to funny reflections on life. The Project has raised millions of dollars for suicide prevention. The audience will get to view postcards that were banned from Warren’s six bestselling books and have the option to share their own secrets during the interactive program.
