Graphic Communication Change of Major

Advisor/CoM Coordinator: Lorraine Donegan 805.756.1108

General Guidelines:

  • Review Cal Poly’s General Change of Major Policy in full

  • Students must complete at least one quarter at Cal Poly before entering into an Individualized Change of Major Agreement (ICMA).

  • Students must be able to graduate in a timely manner. A realistic quarter-by-quarter graduation plan may be required to demonstrate whether this is feasible.

  • Students are allowed 1 ICMA per major. Students who do not meet the conditions of their ICMA will not be issued another ICMA for that major.

Step 1: Research

Step 2: Complete Change of Major Inquiry Form

  • Complete the Change of Major Inquiry Form in your portal.

  • You will receive an email response from the department within 10 business days regarding next steps.

  • Factors that determine eligibility:

    • Must have completed at least two of the following earning a “B” or better: MATH 118, STAT 217, CHEM 110/111 or PHYS 104/121.

    • Must have GPA of 3.0 or higher.

    • Must have at least seven (7) General Education courses remaining.

    • Students with 90 or more units are not eligible to apply.

Step 3: Meet with Department Change of Major Designee

  • Before the end of the fourth week of the Fall, Winter or Spring quarter, meet with the department designee (Lorraine Donegan) to determine the feasibility of changing majors. Students may not initiate a major change during Summer quarter.

  • Office hours for Lorraine Donegan can be found online:

  • If a student is granted an ICMA, it will not exceed two quarters and will require:

    • Earn a grade point average of 3.3 or higher in Graphic Communication coursework.

    • Achieve a Cal Poly GPA of 3.0 or higher for the duration of the ICMA (enrolled full-time).

    • Meet with the department designee (Lorraine Donegan) during the first four weeks of each quarter of the ICMA to discuss registration and/or completion of the ICMA.

    • Upon completion of the agreement the student must have at least a 3.0 cumulative GPA.

    • The ICMA will be terminated if a student is academically disqualified prior to the completion of the agreement, or if a student is on academic probation at the completion of the agreement.

  • Once a student meets the terms of the ICMA, they are admitted to their intended major.

    • Students who do not meet the conditions of their ICMA will not be issued another ICMA for this major.

**The completion of coursework without prior consultation with the intended major department does not guarantee the student eligibility to switch into the intended major.**
