College Based Fees Letter to Students 2012-13

March 15, 2013

From:  Dr. Greg Bohr, CBF Committee Chair

To: Social Sciences Department Students and CBF Committee

Re: Update on CBF usage for 2012-13

Dear Students/Committee Members:

Over the course of the 2012-13 academic year, the department used our allocation of CBF funds to reserve seats for ANG, SOC and SOCS majors in high-demand courses, as well as to offer sections of courses that otherwise would not have been available. As in past years, we distributed these seats across our majors and between quarters as evenly as possible.

Overall, 733 seats were reserved for our majors. The following table shows the distribution of these seats by course prefix, and by quarter:

The assistance of the CBF committee was invaluable in identifying which courses are particularly impacted, and therefore should have reserved seats. The course numbers in which seats were set aside over the 2012-13 year are:

COURSE NUMBERS:

ANT (6)

201, 202, 250, 344, 345, 360

GEOG (10)

SOC (11)

In AY 2012-13 all of our department’s CBF allocation has been used for classes, as required by the college. Two students were elected to be on the CBF Committee and voted on additional CBF classes that were added this year.

Sincerely,

Terry Jones, Deptartment Chair

Greg Bohr, CBF Faculty Advisor

College Based Fees Plan 2012-13

In the beginning of fall 2012, a letter will be distributed from the department chair to all Social Sciences Department majors (ANG, SOC, SOCS) describing the CBF process and requesting nominations and volunteers for membership. A committee will be formed from the resulting volunteers who will be asked  to serve for the entire year. Subsequent additions and/or replacements will be made as needed in accordance with the committee bylaws.

At the first fall 2012 meeting, the SOCS CBF committee will be asked to approve the following classes as CBF-designated courses. We will reserve seats/sections from this list over the academic year based on the committee’s recommendations as well as our own knowledge of current need, with goal of evenly distributing CBF expenditures between disciplines and quarters.
