College Based Fees Letter to Students 2013-14

May 3, 2014

Dear Music Majors,

I want to begin the annual review of our CBF expenditures with a word of thanks. Your continued support for Cal Poly’s CBF program has helped make us a better music department, and given you a better education. Your commitment to a quality education – and your willingness to support that commitment financially – is a continuing, and much-appreciated, bright spot in these challenging times.

Below is a list of the current student committee, whose 2 year terms will end Spring 2014 (we will conduct a campaign to fill the vacancies, due to graduation, at the start of Fall 2014).

  • Andrew Redel
  • Alessandra Shanus
  • Ryan Waczek

This student committee solicits feedback from music majors regarding CBF funding. After the feedback period is over, the committee members meet with me (in my roles as both chair of the Music Department and faculty CBF representative). We continue to fund small performing ensembles/activity classes taught by part-time faculty members. The remaining funds are used to support small performing ensembles taught by full-time faculty members, as well as applied lessons taught by part-time faculty members.

The funded classes for 2013-14 are:

  • MU 265 Accelerated Piano Skills Susan Davies
  • MU 168/368 Accompanying Susan Davies
  • MU 171/371 Brass Ensemble Christopher Woodruff
  • MU 171/371 Guitar Ensemble Jim Bachman

• Additional small instrumental/vocal ensemble classes historically taught by part-time faculty but not being taught by full-time faculty because of the current budget situation

Any unspent balance is rolled over into our CBF account, however the goal is to expend all CBF fees within a given academic year.

I’d be happy to discuss our current (or future) use of CBF monies if you have any questions. Again, thank you for your support in these difficult times.

Sincerely,

Dr. Meredith Brammeier
Music Department, Chair
