This course focuses on the literatures of the Spanish-speaking peoples
in Spain, Latin America, and Aztlán. The methodologies are based on
introductory literary criticism and history of literature. The order of presentation
is mostly chronological, but the overall organizing principle is by literary
genres. The purpose is to discover major trends that run throughout the target
literatures in such a way that we can appreciate Hispanic literature as a
good in itself while also learning objective knowledge about the target subject.
Of course, the largest goal is expanding our personal and collective humanity
and contributing to the good of our fellow humans and the world.
The required reading material includes Spain's national epic poem, the Star
Wars-like chivalric romance in which the idea of California itself was created,
a short masterpiece by Cervantes, a play, and a book about contemporary politics,
society, economy, morality, and education in Spain.
Course Outcomes:

intermediate to advanced cultural competency
intermediate critical writing and thinking competencies
introductory critical reading competencies in a range of Hispanic literatures
expanded knowledge about literary modes, genres, historical periods,
and cultural areas.
