GRADES

NOTES:

• In addition to class hours, students are responsible for independent work in the Polylingual International Research Center in the Air Conditioning Building (12-105).

ADDS:

• Adds are the responsibility of the student. Adds are by signed permit only.

WITHDRAWS:

Withdraws (with grade of W) are only made with permission of the instructor and appropriate campus officials. The Withdrawal petition is available in the Office of Academic Records. All such petitions in this class will be automatically granted through the end of the seventh week. After the end of the seventh week, all withdraw requests must be accompanied by written justification and verification. Withdraws will be granted only for "an emergency situation clearly beyond the control of the student". You must present your case to the instructor, and the Chair of the Department of Modern Languages and Literatures (FOB 28A).

COURSE LANGUAGE: The language of instruction is Spanish.

OUTCOMES:

According to the MLL Rhetorical Syllabus, SPAN 122 offers the following outcomes: intermediate language competencies; review of half of the principal grammatical topics; knowledge of various prominent historical events in the Spanish-speaking world; an appreciation of the uniqueness of Hispanic political structures; popular culture; 1500 words of essays; aspects of literary texts and literary concepts.

COURSE CONTENT:

Cover the second half of Al corriente. These ten weeks are dedicated to intermediate Spanish language and culture. The instructor (Dr. Little) emphasizes objective grammar and memorized vocabulary more than some other instructors. However, the basic methodology is predicated on communicative competence and total immersion in the target language of Spanish. The course is aimed at students who have already had basic instruction in Spanish and a presentation of this material. In itself, the course will give the student a review of Spanish language and grammar up to the entry into the second significant language learning threshhold of language learning. Students who earn and A or B may expect to pass through this challenging threshhold.

COURSE REQUIREMENTS:

Class participation and attendance are required. They have a direct impact on your grade. All workbook exercises must be turned in on the date indicated in the syllabus. Late work will be given a point off for each day it is late. Workbook exercises are to be turned in to the instructor. Workbook exercises must have student's name on them.

LABORATORY:

The laboratory is to be done with the digitized tapes available in the Polylingual International Research Center.
