This course is taught in Cal Poly's state-of-the art language laboratory: the Polylingual International Resource Center (PIRC; 12-105). The PIRC opened during Spring Quarter, 2000. At the right is a photo of the instructor teaching the verb "ser" during a class session in Summer Quarter, 2000.

Course Goals:

• This course focuses on the language and cultures of the Spanish-speaking peoples. It will introduce students to all of the basic aspects of the language spoken by five hundred million people who speak Spanish as a first language and the three quarters of a billion people who speak it as a first or second language.

• Above all, we hope to enrich our lives here and now in California. To achieve this goal the course balances theoretical knowledge about Spanish grammar with classroom and web-based experience of the culture by means of art, music, literature, photography, videos, film, in-class conversation, oral and written grammar practice, and much more.
