GRADABLE WORK:
|
GRADES |
NOTES:
In addition to class hours, students are responsible for independent
work in the Polylingual International Research Center in the Air Conditioning
Building (12-105).
Mi diario: All of your written entries in this chapter-by-chapter "diary"
will be kept in a document on the computer you work on (with a partner in most
cases) in PIRC. You will email these to the instructor on the due date for the
homework (tarea) for each chapter.
ADDS:
Adds are the responsibility of the student. Adds are by signed permit only.
WITHDRAWS:
Withdraws (with grade of W) are only made with permission of
the instructor and appropriate campus officials. The Withdrawal petition is
available in the Office of Academic Records. All such petitions in this class
will be automatically granted through the end of the seventh week. After the
end of the seventh week, all withdraw requests must be accompanied by written
justification and verification. Withdraws will be granted only for "an emergency
situation clearly beyond the control of the student". You must present your
case to the instructor, and the Chair of the Department of Modern Languages
and Literatures (FOB 28A).
COURSE LANGUAGE: The language of instruction is Spanish.
OUTCOMES:
According to the MLL Rhetorical Syllabus, SPAN 104 offers the following outcomes: competency in contextualized language situations including problem solving, role playing, past and future grammatical structures, additional work in grammatical order; more work on basic phonetics; cultural competency concerning basic poems and songs, the idea of cultural diversity, and traditions, customs, and Hispanic media. Students will be able to write a total of at least 1200 words in Spanish at the entry level competency.
COURSE CONTENT:
Cover the entire length and breadth of Puntos de Partida. These ten weeks are dedicated to elementary (i.e., beginning) Spanish language and culture. The instructor (Dr. Little) emphasizes objective grammar and memorized vocabulary more than some other instructors. However, the basic methodology is predicated on communicative competence and total immersion in the target language of Spanish. The course is aimed at students who have never had a presentation of this material and students who studied it so long ago that they have forgotten it (almost) entirely. In itself, the course will give the student an introduction to Spanish up to an including the completion of the first significant language learning threshhold.
COURSE REQUIREMENTS:
Class participation and attendance are required. They have a direct impact on your grade. All workbook exercises must be turned in on the date indicated in the syllabus. Late work will be given a point off for each day it is late. Workbook exercises are to be turned in to the instructor. Workbook exercises must have student's name on them.
LABORATORY:
The laboratory is to be done with the digitized tapes available in the Polylingual International Research Center.
