Artifacts
The flaked stone assemblage from CA-MNT-2181 consists of 1 core, 1 biface, and
101 pieces of debitage.
Core
The Monterey chert core is from a STU at the depth of 0-10 cm. The artifact resembles a large piece of interior shatter and weighs 63.8g. One edge shows a suggestion of bifacial reduction.
Biface
The single biface, made of Monterey chert, is also from a STU at the depth of 0-10 cm. It is a midsection fragment that may, in fact, represent a projectile point. It is clearly too large to represent an arrow point, but instead seems to reflect the large biface technology that was more common prior to the Late Period.
Debitage
The Phase II investigation of CA-MNT-2181 yielded a total of 101 pieces of debitage. Monterey chert dominates the collection (N = 29; 7.4%). The collection is too small to render any meaningful interpretations about technology.
Ground stone from CA-MNT-2181 was limited to a single cylindrical pestle fragment recovered from the 10-20 cm level of a STU near BRM Feature B. Like the pestles from adjacent CA-MNT-910, this sandstone specimen was very symmetrical and well-made (Figure 42). It is fairly certain that this implement was used with the BRMs given the proximity of the item to the feature.
