This slide shows another angle of the Garden Facade that is also shown in W-R-W, p. 57. Life at Versailles was highly ordered, with each person having his place and operating under rule governing every aspect of life. This order is reflected in the immense park with its geometric gardens. The geometric gardens are a reflection of an age when observation of the solar system had led to the helio-centric theory of the solar system and the acceptance of universal laws govening the movement of heavenly bodies. These gardens conveyed the belief that man could impose his will over nature. At Versailles orange trees were grown in defiance of the chilly climate in an ornate Orangerie and brought outside when the weather was sufficiently warm.
