Schönbrunn was begun in 1695 as a symbol of the recent defense of Vienna against the Turks (1683) and the successful reconquest of Hungary and penetration into the Balkans. It was designed by the renowned architect Johann Fischer von Erlach. Its facade stretched 175 meters.
