Part III

Chapter 10

1. Describe the experimental paradigm that Ebbinghaus used in his study of memory. What results did he obtain?

2. What are the typical dependent, independent, and control variables used in the studies on memory and forgetting?

3. Describe the Brown-Peterson technique as it is used in experiments in memory.

4. Why is the conclusion drawn from the Scarborough (1972) experiment by Massaro (1975) not an appropriate one? Describe scale attenuation effects in your answer.

5. How can ceiling and floor effects be avoided in psychological research?

6. Distinguish explicit memory tests from implicit memory tests. Give examples of specific experimental procedures of each type.

7. Describe the method for determining a subject's priming score. What does it measure?

8. What is the critical feature behind implicit memory tests?

9. Describe the Warrington and Weiskrantz (1970) study on amnesiacs. What was the procedure and what were the results?

10. Define main effects and interaction. Be able to graph and interpret the graphs of the hypothetical interactions between test type (explicit free recall versus implicit word identification) and memory deficit (amnesiacs versus controls). Be able to describe and interpret the relationships.
